The color blindness test is used to distinguish between different types of color and to determine the type of color blindness. Generally, it includes color-naming tests, matching tests, confusion tests, and laboratory tests. The color naming test is the simplest. The examines must name the color in the test.

Sterling designed the color blind test in 1889 and Ishihara’s improved color blindness test was determined as a must-have tool for a color blind test at the 13th International Ophthalmological Society Conference in 1929.

How Come I Failed The Color Blind Test?

  • Deuteranopia

The most severe form of red-green color blindness is deuteranopia.

  • Protanopia

Protanopia is also known as color blindness number one. The patient can't tell the difference between red and dark green, purplish red, and purple. Green is frequently mistaken for yellow, purple for blue, and yellow and blue are combined to form white.   • Protanomaly

Red-green color blindness affects approximately 99% of all colorblind people. Over 8% of men and 0.5% of men have it.

Instructions For The Ishihara Color Test

Plates 1–17 each have a number, while plates 18–24 have one or two wiggly lines. To pass each test, you must identify the correct number or trace the wiggly lines correctly.

  1. Sit 75cm away from your monitor, with each circle at eye level.
  2. You should ideally have soft natural light and no glare on your screen. The color of the images can be affected by interior lighting and glare.
  3. Within 5 seconds, try to identify the hidden number or line, then click on the image (left mouse button).
  4. When you left-click, the answer will be revealed, along with an explanation of your condition if you got it wrong.
  5. Continue to the next Ishihara test; complete all of them to help determine the severity of your color blindness.

Notes:

  • By clicking on the plate itself, you can switch between the original plate and the answer.
  • Plates 1 and 24 are control tests; people with normal vision and all types of color blindness should be able to tell them apart. When testing children, these two plates are especially useful for identifying cheeky behavior!
  • This test cannot guarantee complete accuracy. The original colors used may be affected by your monitor and the quality loss of online images. If the results of these tests indicate that you may be colorblind, you should seek professional confirmation.

What Is An Ishihara-Type Color Blindness Test?

The goal of the Ishihara test is to correctly identify the symbol (usually a number) displayed on the Ishihara test plate. Test plates are made with a special random dot pattern whose colors and sizes produce Luminance-Contrast Noise.


The resulting color pattern conceals any color brightness differences (Luminance Contrast) that could assist the colorblind in detecting and identifying the number. That means you can only read the symbol hidden in the plate using your color perception. Furthermore, the colors used to disguise brightness are highly desaturated. Because the colors are difficult to distinguish, only those with normal color vision can see the hidden symbol and pass the test.


Furthermore, the color blind's color sensitivities are shifted. Ishihara is a good test because desaturated colors cause people to become confused in real life. Pink, light green, and grey, for example, are nearly identical to the color blind.
